TFT Array that is the biggest technological barrier in Flexible Display, currently discussed as the next generation display, is generally made with silicon being the basic material. But, because silicon semiconductor material is not sufficient to make flexible display which needed to be light, bendable and also foldable, necessity to newly develop semiconductor with more gentle material other than silicon.

Accordingly, Organic Thin Film Transistor (OTFT) development that has simple manufacturing process with low production cost and also non-breakable to impacts that can be bended and folded, has been argued to be the most important research area.

OTFT Application Fields

The development of OTFT was renewed from its commercialization perspective with Samsung Electronics' announcing 15" XGA TFT-LCD utilizing Organic Thin Film Transistor (OTFT) for the first time in the world in 2005.
In 2007, SONY had realized for the first time in the world an All Organic Display that combined Plastic Substrate, Organic Thin Film Transistor (OTFT) and Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) using Flexible OLED made on top of plastic substrate using organic semiconductor.

Also, Plastic Logic announced its plan to mass produce 10-inch class e-Paper from 2009 using Organic Thin Film Transistor (OTFT) array created using Inkjet Printing.

The flexible display market expects applications in concepts of e-newspaper, e-magazine, and e-book to replace newspapers, magazines, and books, focus firstly in the e-paper display. In addition, the market expects various applications not only as bulletin board-use displays such as interior/exterior-use advertisement boards, but also as a mobile communication device.

Currently, Taiwan-based PVI and Korea-based LG Display are manufacturing e-paper display products utilizing glass substrates. Various companies including Amazon and Sony are launching e-book using such display.

However, a genuine flexible e-paper display using flexible substrates has not yet been produced.

LG Display is expected to be the first maker to produce the flexible e-paper display. The company is developing the flexible e-paper display using metal foil substrates through collaboration with E-ink based on a-Si TFT technology and is planning to manufacture 11.5-inch flexible display products to US-based Hearst Corporation in e-magazine format during 1H'09.

Flexible Display Substrate Technology and Development Trend

Flexible Display Substrate Technology and Development Trend report explored flexible display substrate technology development trend by main companies along with Gas Barrier Coating technology which must be applied in plastic film substrate technology, Metal Foil, and Thin Glass which are currently being used or researched as flexible display substrates.

<Table of Contents>
1. Introduction
2. Flexible Substrate
3. Plastic Film Manufacturing Technology
4. Gas Barrier Coating Technology
5. Flexible Plastic Display Substrate Development Activities

'Flexible Display Substrate Technology and Development Trend' report explores Gas Barrier Coating technology and flexible display substrate technology development trend per main companies. Gas Barrier Coating technology must be imported when using thin glass, metal foil, plastic film substrate technology, and plastic film substrate that are currently used or researched as flexible display substrate.

Flexible display is being mentioned as next-generation display. The key technology in order to actualize flexible display is flexible substrate development technology. However, the perfect substrate material that satisfies processing requirement for the current TFT-LCD display production hasn't been developed.

In order to actualize flexible display, it is desperately needed to develop substrate that has chemical endurance that isn't contracted or expanded upon optical characteristic and organic solvent during process, thermal stability that can endure high temperature and pressure during process, and a quality that can effectively intercept air and moist transmissions.

The main companies that are conducting research and developing flexible display substrate film are like the following. GE of America which currently in merged with SABIC of Saudi Arabia is in process of researching high heat resistance Polycarbonate (PC). Dupont-Teijin developed Polyethylene naphthalate (PEN). Sumitomo Bakelite of Japan developed Polyether sulfone (PES) substrate and Teijin is mainly conducting research upon Polycarbonate (PC).

Specially, 10 Japanese companies including Sumitomo Bakelite and JSR collaborated to establishe TRADIM (Technology Research Association for Advanced Display Materials) and are actively conducting researched to produce flexible plastic substrate using Roll-to-Roll process.

Each of the companies currently developed a very diverse set of substrate, drive element and display mode technologies in order to realize flexible display and the results are announced.
E-Ink of the US is leading the effort to commercialize flexible display e-paper technologies. While single color e-paper is currently in the commercialization process, color e-paper faces many challenges to solve prior to commercialization. Moreover, Polymer Vision, which is a spin-off of the Philips, launched the active drive type of e-paper display that enables 5 inch roll by combining with the E-ink's e-paper panel on the OTFT back plane in 2005. Currently, the company completed the construction of flexible display plant in South Hampton in the UK, and it plans to start the mass production starting from the end of 2008. Plastic Logic secured 100 Million USD in venture fund from a venture capital group, and began to construct the line in Dresden, Germany in May 2007, which is currently being set up wit the goal of pilot mass producing during the second half of 2008.
LG Display recently cooperated with the E-ink based on the amorphous Silicon TFT technologies to focus on the research of flexible e-Book display using Metal Foil substrate, and the research results are being continuously announced. Starting from the second half of 2008, the company plans to mass produce 12.0 inch (B5 size) black and white e-paper.
Likewise, many display companies are preparing to enter this market segment with diverse set of technologies.
