Apple’s new idea-iWatch

Apple iWatch - Concept watch with touchscreen and pico-projector
“Designers of ADR Studio presented a very nice concept called Apple iWatch. His name, indeed, Apple style, and, as you might guess, this watch. Apple iWatch is a wristwatch with a touch screen and built-in pico-projector. The device is enclosed in aluminum housing and the shape and appearance, in general, resembles miniature iPad. The display, according to the designer's idea can be displayed not only time but also the weather forecast, also available in RSS reader. “

Gesture Controlled Kitchen Tap

Spatial Interaction from Jasper Dekker on Vimeo.

Designer Jasper Dekker proposed so called a spatial interaction touchless kitchen tap. A user can control the intensity of water flow and choose hot and cold water with simple touch gestures.

This is yet a concept design. But I found a commercial version of the above conceptual touch-controlled tap. Although it doesn’t provide rich touch gesture interactions but I think it’s enough to call it touch faucet.

Sony artacTable with 3D multitouch due June 2010

Sony's 35-inch atracTable to be 'industrialized' in June, show Microsoft how it's done (video)
“Swiss company Atracsys swims in the same waters as Microsoft's mythical Surface beast -- namely, multitouch horizontal displays -- but where it might differ from its more lauded competitor is in actually bringing its hardware to wider markets. Having sold the tech knowhow to Sony, the company is today informing the world that its atracTable is ready for mass production and commercialization this June. We've been told that prototype designs are now "finished," leaving only the marketing, pricing and distribution details to be worked out. A high-contrast, Full HD screen is promised, which will be able to communicate with your mobile devices (naturally) or respond to motion input picked up by a pair of Sony's camcorders which come built in. Skip past the break for a couple of video demos from last year.”

Google Buys 3D Multitouch Software Maker BumpTop

Google Buys BumpTop: 3-D Multitouch Tablet Interface on the Way?
“Is there a tablet in Google’s future with a three-dimensional, multitouch user interface? It’s increasingly likely, given that the search giant has just acquired BumpTop, a startup whose unique software creates a 3-D environment where users can toss files and folders around as though they were playing cards, stack them in related piles and “hang” them on the virtual walls. If Google is working on an iPad-style tablet, as many believe that it is, a BumpTop-style interface would be dramatic departure from the typical 2-D app/icon approach, and could provide a significant alternative to the look and feel of Apple’s iPad.”

Capacitive Touch Screens Go Large

Usually, (projected) capacitive touch screens are used for small display devices. It’s mainly due to EMI (electro-magnetic interference) problem when the touch screens become large. Even though such a difficulty, some companies have showed off large capacitive multi-touch touch screens in the market and media. Here are two examples.

Press Release: YDREAMS PARTNERS WITH CANESTA TO REDEFINE AUGMENTED REALITY AND BRING IT TO THE BROAD MARKET

MONTE DA CAPARICA, PORTUGAL and SUNNYVALE, CA – MAY 24, 2010 – YDreams and Canesta Inc. today announced a partnership that has the potential to redefine augmented reality and bring it to the broad market.

“Augmented reality will change the way we market and use products, communicate and entertain ourselves,” said Ivan Franco YDreams´ R&D Director. “But, to date, implementing augmented reality solutions has only been possible with very specialized techniques. By working together with Canesta, we look forward to making augmented reality a part of everyday life.”

YDreams has been working on Natural User Interfaces (NUI) for more than 9 years for some of the largest corporations in the world. To do this, the company has developed a sophisticated proprietary software platform, combining multiple advanced technologies such as computer vision, physics simulation, artificial intelligence and several others.

“One of the most difficult aspects of designing NUI applications has been to create a sense of real world interactions. We envision consumers naturally browsing through digital catalogs, adding to the user experience of ecommerce or being inside movies, delivered by IPTV platforms.”

Until now Augmented Reality has delivered limited applications to the general public, mostly offering 3-D objects on top of visually obtrusive markers. By using Canesta’s 3-D vision sensors, YDreams applications can do real-time capture of any object in 3-D, without the aid of any special markers or enhancements. “This completely changes the scope of where and how augmented reality can be used,” said Franco.

“YDreams is among the world’s leading organizations in developing augmented reality experiences,” said Jim Spare, president and CEO of Canesta. “By combining our mass market 3-D input sensors with YDreams’ expertise, we will see broad uses of these formerly very specialized applications. This will change how immersive and realistic so many kinds of communications and interactions will become.”

A video of a demo developed by YDreams can be viewed online at YDreams’ official YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXcIZ1R68SQ) and it will be possible to experience the technology live at the ARE2010 event (augmentedrealityevent.com) on June 2-3, in Santa Clara, CA.

About Canesta

Canesta (www.canesta.com) is the inventor of revolutionary, low cost electronic perception technology and leading provider of single chip CMOS 3-D sensors that fundamentally change the relationship between devices and their users. This capability makes possible “the other side of 3-D” – true 3-D perception as input to everyday devices, rather than the widely understood 3-D representational technologies as output. Canesta’s 3-D input technology, based upon tiny, CMOS 3-D imaging chips or “sensors”, enables fine-grained, 3-dimensional depth-perception in a wide range of applications. Products based on this capability can then react on sight to the actions or motions of individuals and objects in their field of view, gaining levels of functionality and ease of use that were simply not possible in an era when such devices were blind. Canesta’s focus is on mass market consumer electronics, but many applications exist in other markets as well. Some of Canesta’s customers and partners include Hitachi, Honda, Optex, Optronic, Quanta, SMSC, and others which have yet to be announced.

Canesta is located in Sunnyvale, CA. The company has filed in excess of fifty patents, 41 of which have been granted so far

YDreams is a trademark of YDreams - Informática, S.A., registered in the US and other countries.

Pros and Cons of Gestural User Interfaces

Pasta&Vinegar’ blog has a summary of pros and cons of gestural interfaces:

Good
  • Natural Interaction
  • Direct Interaction
  • Terse and Powerful Interaction
Bad
  • Fatigue
  • Non Self-Revealing
  • Immersion Syndrome:
  • Segmentation of Physical Actions
Immersion syndrome refers to the inadvertent or unintended triggering of device operations. Capacitive touch screens often suffer from this problem.

Segmentation of physical actions was not a serious problem in the era of single-touch touch screens. In the period, there were a small number of gestures and gesture themselves are simple and easy to remember such as tap, double-tap. As time goes by, interfaces now provide so many natural multi-touch gestures. It's a source of headaches for developers and users. Users have to remember gesture vocabularies and developers have to provide a reliable gesture recognition algorithm that robustly differentiates many gestures in real-time.

Jakub Linowski has posted an article about affordance for the cursor with a live example. Here is an excerpt:

“I’ve seen users struggle to realize when additional interactions are possible. This I think is largely due to a lack of cues. Hence, these little cursor accordances aim to provide additional contextual symbols that float alongside the cursor.”
